Truck Driver Applications That Impress

Truck Driver Applications That Impress

Though the truck driving industry is currently dealing with a shortage of qualified CDL drivers, the hiring process is still competitive and driver recruiters still reject unqualified truck drivers. Driver recruiters are still challenged with finding the right talent to fit the right CDL job. The growing use of online applications can lull truck drivers into thinking that they can be more relaxed with the information they present. But the truth is that to get your driver application to the top of the list, there are areas where professional drivers should focus a little extra effort.

Driver Training and Education – This would seem to be obvious, but driver applicants can sometimes gloss over this area, leaving too little information. Be sure to include the names of each truck driving school or program attended, along with the dates. Be specific with months and years. Additionally, add any training which might be relevant to the company that’s hiring. For example, a truck driver who’s an expert with plants should highlight this on an application to haul live greenery.

Skills – Be sure to include any and all skills that would make you more valuable, truck driving skills or otherwise. For example, don’t overlook the fact that as a truck driver, you gained strong mechanical skills, and even own your own tools. This information may not be asked for on the driver application, but that’s even more reason to include it.

Awards –Driver applications often include a section which asks about any career awards a truck driver has received. Here’s your opportunity to brag about your Truck Driver of the Month recognition.

References – Whenever possible, be sure to include the exact number of references that the driver application requests, and make sure they are strong. Let your references know that they might receive a call and fill them in on the details of the driving job, so they’re not flying blind.

Sell Yourself – Many truck driver applications provide a section for the applicant to add any important additional information about themselves or their driving experience. Take advantage of this. It’s your opportunity to shine. Mention your excellent attendance record. Talk about your love for truck driving or any career goals you have. Share what made you decide to become a professional truck driver.

Follow Up – Stay on top of any requests that may come through for additional information or driver paperwork. Respond promptly.

Thank You – Finally, if you are called for an interview, it doesn’t hurt to drop the driver recruiter a quick note to say thanks for taking the time to see you. You can also reiterate your interest in the driver job opening.

If you’re looking to apply for a truck driving position soon, applying these tips can help put your driver application in front of the list.
